Linkedin is arguably the best tool for candidates.
Your web site/Your Brand - Yes Linkedin is your website. It is here that most employers and recruiters look to find both active and passive candidates. Like any business that has a web presence, a major challenge is being found among the fray. So, how do you rise above it all. It starts with your brand, YOU. You’ll need to define who you are and what you want to be seen as (we’ll blog later on this topic). Then define the message or elevator pitch. Be very clear and concise.
Increase the odds - Now that you’ve developed the message, craft it into your profile especially in the summary section. Develop keywords that summarize your accomplishments and skills. Recruiters use search terms to find people. You will rank high and be found the more you match a search. Like a resume develop a message under each job position and include key accomplishments. Put in a picture as it creates human interaction. Most if not all websites have a contact page. So should yours. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve found compelling profiles with no means to contact them.
It’s social Marketing - Seems obvious doesn’t it? Well get out and be social. Join groups, you can have up to 50. Find groups that are aligned to your interest, alumni, industry, etc. Be active in those groups by participating in discussion or posting interesting topics. Participation in groups is a great way to be found. Get connected…the more people you’re 1st and 2nd level connections increases your odds of being found and getting a job. Get recommendations from your coworkers and friends.
One last thought. Just like your resume, your Linkedin profile is to market your brand, you. It is not a place to document everything you’ve done. The intent of both is to convey your message and create interest in speaking with you.
